The U.S. Level 4 Travel Advisory

Good morning. Taylor here 👋
There are only 58 days until the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games are set to begin and the U.S. State Department has issued a Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory for Japan.

For some, the news won't impact us much. For others, this is a frustrating turn of events. For athletes prepping for the Olympic/Paralympic Games and upcoming Trials events...well...

The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee has issued a statement reassuring athletes, coaches, and Olympic-fans alike that they are confident in the established mitigation practices and foresee a safe Olympic Games for all of Team USA's athletes.

The recent Olympic news reaffirms our obsession with the word "grit." Despite the emotional rollercoaster that has accompanied the end of this Olympic cycle, athletes have continued to passionately pursue their Olympic dreams.

Other big news this week:

  • Phoenix Mercury signs Cierra Burdick for the 2021 WNBA season.

  • Upcoming: Ella Eastin to share her story with BCST swimmers.

  • CG Sports' Matt Haage explains the usage rights clause.

CEJIH EXPLAINS
By Matt Haage, Athlete Partnerships Associate

Last week, I explained some of the different issues surrounding exclusivity clauses to be aware of in athlete endorsement contracts. This week, I’m explaining another important provision found in these contracts: the usage rights clause.

In the world of sports endorsements, usage rights clauses grant a company the right to use an athlete’s name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights. This is the main reason a brand or company is interested in sponsoring an athlete in the first place. They want the ability to use an athlete’s likeness in a commercial, magazine advertisement, or on their social media platforms.

Even though usage rights can be very beneficial for both parties, there are still a few things to keep in mind when agreeing to the legal language in the usage rights clause: types of media, post-termination usage, and how to avoid issues.

DEMAND YOUR BRAND

Personal Life Philosophy

Surprise! Everyone has a personal brand. If you’re struggling to put yours into words, start by defining your personal life philosophy.

Step 1 - How do you define success? Ask yourself, what legacy do I want to leave? This takes some time and thought. Spend 10 minutes this week to get started. (Heads up, it’s a never-ending project).

Step 2 - Pick out some cornerstones that create the foundation you build your life on. These might be key phrases and words that motivate you every day, or concepts that guide your actions and reactions. Whether it’s a quote your grandfather repeatedly shared, or a note from a parent on one of your elementary school lunches, it may have had a lasting impact on your life, and thus, become a cornerstone by which you make decisions.

Now that you have done that, are these supporting pillars of your brand reflected in your actions, words, interviews, social media posts? How did you use them to work towards leaving a legacy? Don’t leave people guessing.

Long Term Investments by Maia Monell

While short-term investing is all about quick preservation of cash, long-term investing is all about growing your wealth over time.

Here are some options:
Long-term bonds - These include corporate, government, municipal, and international bonds.

  • They pay higher yields than short-term interest-bearing securities.

  • If interest rates rise, the market value of the underlying bon declines.

Check back next week for more long term investment options!
