Matt the VP goes to New York đź—˝
Good morning. Things come back around.
Cejih here! At the end of 2021 our agency began working with a new client who had founded two very influential sports properties: Sports Business Radio and the in person event, Sports PR Summit.
When I was first starting the agency in 2016, I attended the Sports PR Summit in NYC as a way to break into the biz. It was a successful venture and many of the contacts made that day still do business with CG Sports in 2022!
Why am I sharing this? This week our VP of CG Sports, Matt Amerlan, attended the 2022 Sports PR Summit. Matt led the sponsorship portfolio selling for these two properties, landing partnerships with: Morgan Stanley, Heartlent Group, Jordan Brand, ESPN, Syracuse University and many more.
It's one of those cool "step back and look" at what you've done type moments. While many of us are deep in the weeds of trying to have a great May and June, this was a great reminder to take a step back. Give yourself some perspective. You'll return to the saddle with more motivation having done so.
Thank you for reading - here's to another great weekly newsletter below.

5 Things I Learned from Elon Musk
Arguably one of the most notable entrepreneurs of our time, Elon Musk is still paving the way for the future of electric cars, spare aeronautics, and now...Twitter. I just wrapped up Ashlee Vance's extremely well written biography of Elon Musk. It was a major hit (in my book). While getting a deep dive into the warehouses and on-site action of the several attempts at a Falcon-1 launch, I learned quite a few things from Elon's character and business leadership style (if you can call it that).
Be relentless in your pursuit of making a difference. Without purpose and genuine desire to go above and beyond, it is unlikely you will make it past the rough patches.
Work ethic + willingness to learn = game changer.
Try, try, try again... and again... and then another time. It might take YEARS to perfect your product, but if someone is going to do it, why not you and your team?
Networking and trust take time. Elon built a group of supporters who carried him through near bankruptcy... on Christmas Eve. Your team will answer your call in the darkest hours, the most inconvenient time, and when you need it most, if they're the right people. Be selective, but genuine.
If an organization does not align with your goals and mission, do not partner with them.
This list could go on, but I'll leave it at that. Give the book a read and let me know what you think, if you agree or disagree!
Athletes Should Make More Posts Like This
In person events, speaking gigs and appearances are making a big comeback in 2022. If you find yourself with an opportunity to be giving an appearance, here is the best type of post you can make to ensure future deals.
We call it the “closing the loop” post with our CG Sports athletes. The process is very simple.
Here it is:
Share a photo, video or short clip from your event. The SOONER you can make this post, the better it will do.
Tag the company, team or person(s) that invited you to speak or give the appearance. Give them a shoutout.
Share what you talked about with the audience. End with a big THANK YOU to your host. This will show future hosts that you are a great guest to bring in.
You can take a pic right before the event starts, or a video. You can do a follow up post or video from the stage. Or you can ask someone to take photos of you as you are speaking.
