Your favorite sports…animated!
Good morning. Cartoons aren't just for Saturday mornings.
Last week, the National Hockey League (NHL) partnered with Disney's "Big City Greens" to air a live animated version of the game between the Washington Capitals and the New York Rangers.
The animated game featured live, real-time volumetric animations of both the teams and players that were modeled stylistically after the characters of "Big City Greens." To do this, the NHL and Disney utilized NHL Edge positioning data (puck and player tracking) to replicate the action on the ice. Both games had ESPN analysts calling the action.
If you didn't get a chance to watch it, you can view the highlights here.
What is so amazing and encouraging about this event is the connection it is allowing sports to make with a younger generation. It is placing the sport directly within a world that they know and love. Plus: the animated game included basic and easy-to-understand definitions for important rules of the game!
This isn't the first time the professional sports arena has sought to connect with kids; the National Football League (NFL) has partnered with Nickelodeon for "NFL on Nickelodeon" or "NFL Slimetime" to introduce young viewers to football and explain basic football terms.
The hope is that not only will these crossovers create understanding of a sport for young kids, but that niche sports can be understood and appreciated by more people overall.
