The NBA bubble, Tokyo 2021 and the ISL
Today I share three takeaways from watching the NBA Finals, the success of the bubble and what it could mean for the Tokyo 2021 Olympics...
1. The NBA's great bubble experiment actually worked: The NBA pulled off what many said would be a near impossible logistical feat by conducting their season in a bubble in Orlando, FL. Players were tested daily. Fans were not allowed in the arenas. Media was given limited access to players. In doing so they proved that it can be done and have thus set an example for other major sporting events to follow. To me this is a big win and could add an element of hope that the Tokyo Olympic organizers may be able to implement aspects of the bubble at a larger scale.
2. The Tokyo 2021 Olympics and NBA player participation: Speaking of the Olympics, Adam Silver (Commissioner of the NBA) recently stated that if the 2021 season starts late it is unlikely that they would stop for the summer Olympics. This not only affects Team USA Basketball, but also other countries who have top international talent playing in the NBA. While this is not a hard "no", it certainly does not help if the star power of one of the world's most popular international sports are not able to compete in Tokyo.
3. Can the ISL do the same with their season? What will be interesting to watch is the upcoming International Swimming League season in Budapest which kicks off in a couple of weeks. This will be one of the first major international team sporting events with athletes from all over the world staying in the same location to compete over several weeks. If the ISL can have similar results as the NBA, then this could be very promising as we look ahead to summer 2021.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out over the next few weeks. I'll be sure to share more insights as well as hit on other areas of the sports marketing industry for you.
