Say hello to Q4

Good morning.

Q4 is about to start and, for most of us, that means big goals and short timelines.

Here are some of our favorite tips at CG Sports Co to thrive during the Q4 season:

  • Utilize your calendar. Whether you are utilizing an old school paper desktop calendar or Google calendar, you want all of your meetings and project deadlines in one place. Personally, I also color-code my calendar, so that I can see when different aspects of my job (publishing, weekly newsletter, or marketing) is requiring a little extra attention.

  • Book as many meetings as you can. The best way to hit your sales goal is to connect with people. Send the email. Make the phone call. Ask for the meeting. Remember what Uncle Yung taught us: “It’s never a ‘no,’ just a not now.”

  • Relax and have fun. Creativity and a good spirit are two key components of sports marketing. We just finished an amazing Olympic/Paralympic set in Paris and now get to build hype and momentum towards LA28! Have fun with the creative aspects of your job and it will draw in the right people and deals.

Remember to set goals to begin Q4, so that you can track your progress throughout the quarter. If at any point, you have sales or sports marketing questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out — we would love to hear from you!

Alex Massialas

The 2024 Paris Olympics wrapped up several weeks ago and Olympian Alex Massialas has penned a thoughtful, heartfelt reflection on his time in Paris.

Massialas wrote, “In sports, sometimes you prepare your hardest and know what you are capable of, yet the day of competition goes awry. It is painful to fall short of your dreams and expectations, but it is that pain that makes sport beautiful.”

He continued on, stating, “This is not the end of the story for me, I have my sights set on @la28games. I’m excited to embrace all the new challenges that await in these next four years, starting with my new role as @stanfordfence Head Coach.”

The entire reflection can be read online.

Data matters, but it’s not the whole story.

As a writer, I try to ignore numbers and data as much as I can. If I stare at them for too long, they look like a bunch of mismatched scrabble tiles with no clear answer in sight.

But there are days where my swimmer brain wins and I look at the numbers and see patterns. On those days, I focus on the following (for a newsletter):

  • Open rates: This is [arguably] the most important because it means that I have grabbed the audience’s attension and they want to know more about something in this newsletter. It could be one item; it could be every word I’ve written this week. I don’t question it; I simply celebrate!

  • Click rates/click performance: Much of the information that I share in our newsletter, I learn from other sources. So I not only want to share those links, the hope is that people will want to learn more, too, by visiting the original article or website. Our clients, their sponsors, and our collective partners do amazing things every day — let’s celebrate and support them!
