Marketing lessons from Paris 2024

Good morning.

The Olympics and Paralympics are officially over and Paris can take a breath. Here are some lessons we learned and can apply to the sports marketing realm moving forward:

  • High quality visuals matter. With the omnipresence of social media, tv, print, and video, it is ever important to have high quality photos to help tell the story of your brand. This helps brand to connect with your audience in a more authentic and powerful way.

  • Social media presence is a must. Try as you might, it is unavoidable in today’s society and is a tool that needs to be cultivated. In Paris, social media helped to increase visibility for athletes regardless of whether they medaled or not. This also increased visibility for many sports. How do you achieve this? Post. Repost. Engage with other posts.

  • Athletes make great creators. Throughout the Olympics, many athletes were posting to their accounts about content connected to their sport: how to remove artistic swimming hairstyles, body positivity, and more. The point? Fans and brands alike want to hear from the athletes themselves.

If you’re working in sports marketing, talk over these lessons with your team and set some clear marketing goals to employ in Q4 and end the year strong.

Building Momentum: Small Steps, Big Wins

The end of Q3 can sometimes feel super slow and impossibly fast at the same time. When that is happening, it is important to remember how momentum is built in the first place.

Let’s dive into the art of building momentum and how those small steps can lead to big victories.

Step 1: The Tiny Triumphs: "Small wins can lead to big gains," says organizational psychologist Adam Grant. It's like leveling up in a video game – you start with the low-hanging fruit and work your way up. So, celebrate those tiny triumphs! Did you reply to that email you've been avoiding? Victory dance time.

Step 2: The Power of Consistency: Robert Greene, author of "The 48 Laws of Power," once said, "The successful among us delay gratification and take small, incremental steps to build momentum." Consistency is the secret sauce. It's not about the one big move; it's about the daily grind that adds up over time. Just like compound interest, but for your achievements.

Step 3: Embrace the 'Two-Minute Rule': Ever heard of the 'Two-Minute Rule'? If a task takes less than two minutes, do it now. It's the brainchild of productivity guru David Allen. Taking care of those quick tasks instantly boosts your productivity and sets the tone for the day. Your to-do list will thank you.
