Use your voice

Good morning. Voices are powerful.

The 2022-23 season for the cross-country skiing World Cup has new events on the schedule as equal distance racing opportunities are now being offered for both men and women. Rosie Brennan, U.S. Olympian and skiing stalwart, was among the group of women who raced in the first equal distance races.

Yesterday, she published a blog post reflecting on the introduction of equal distance racing in cross-country skiing. If you haven't had a chance yet, you can the full post here.

After reading her post, I was struck by two things:

  1. It is important to listen. In her post, Brennan discusses how she felt listening to former athletes discuss their experiences and concerns surrounding equal distance racing. Because she listened, Brennan was able to use their stories and input to help her evaluate her own thoughts and arrive at her own conclusions.

  2. The fear of change is real. But it doesn't mean people are not open to change. Change can be scary and intimidating, but it can also be exciting and awe-inspiring.

Our voices matter. When we remember to balance speaking out with listening to others, great things can happen.

How to set your rate for appearances

As an athlete you will be asked, “What’s your rate to come and speak to my team/company?” In this article we provide you with a framework for exactly how to answer this question.

Here are some general numbers/rules of thumb:

  1. Practice, visuals, and being able to deliver the speech within a time window. If you have a speech that is rehearsed, includes slides/visuals and can be delivered in a clean 30 min window, then you're safe to charge anywhere between $2,500 to $4,500 as a start. The more practice you have (even if it's yourself at home practicing), the more you can lean towards the higher side.

  2. It's important to know your buyer. If it's a school, you may want to consider an entirely different rate card just for schools. Or what some will do is they will offer 2 speeches per year pro bono, just travel or virtual.

If you're just starting out it's more important that you get reps, photos of you speaking and video of you speaking. This is far more valuable than an initial fee of $2,000 you may receive.
