Ted Lasso’s World Cup ⚽

Good morning. "Futbol is life."

At least according to the Ted Lasso character Danny Rojas and the millions of people tuning in to the 22nd FIFA World Cup.

The U.S. Men's soccer team (USMNT) won a pivotal match against Iran last night with a 1-0 score. The match, considered to be one of the most anticipated of the 2022 World Cup, moves the U.S. to the knockout stage of the tournament where they will face the Netherlands on December 3rd.

Much like Ted Lasso, I struggle to keep the rules of soccer straight. In fact, "you could fill two internets with what [we] don't know about [soccer.]" What I do know about soccer is this: The love for soccer is a universal language, bringing people of all backgrounds together. There is a pureness to the energy produced at soccer games and it binds us to one another whether we are cheering on the same team or not.

If you haven't caught any of the World Cup matches yet, there is still time. Matches will continue to run every day until the final match plays on December 18th. For all of our soccer fans, remember Ted Lasso's wise words, "I believe in hope. I believe in believe."

How to make yourself sellable in today's market

We are seeing a few shifts in today’s sponsorship market. Sponsors are spending more on tangible assets that can be easily approved. Property sponsorships do really well because they are able to provide a full menu of sponsorship items for purchase: advertising space, “presenting sponsor” packages, “title sponsor” packages, “gold level” partner packages, etc.

Athletes who can digest their sellable assets into tangible packages are going to see more success with sponsors in 2023. Work with you agent to create your own standard sponsorship packages to be sold in the market.

A few ideas on what an athlete can provide may include:

  1. Logo space on your kit, suit, uniform.

  2. Branding at appearances or camps

  3. Standard social media package

  4. Local sponsor package
