Going the extra (hurdle) mile

Good morning. Never limit yourself.

There comes a point in every athlete’s career where they find that they’ve become a specialist. This applies to all sports and there is nothing wrong with it. Specializing in an event or position is a surefire way to support your team and grow as an athlete.

But sometimes there are circumstances that take us out of our specialties and provide us with new opportunities to support our team.

This is exactly what happened to Jolien Boumkwo. Boumkwo finished seventh in the shot put and would normally have been finished with competition. However, when injuries prevented her Belgian teammates from competing, she stepped up to support her team at the 2023 European Athletics Team Championships by adding a race to her schedule: the 100-meter hurdles.

Boumkwo’s race earned her team an additional two points, earned herself a season-best time of 32.81, and reminded the world what it means to be a good teammate.

The hurdles are not Boumkwo’s specialty and that is okay. What matters is that she ran the race confidently and finished with a smile on her face, all while supporting her team.

Later, Boumkwo explained to the press, “I’m really happy that this race symbolized something – the team spirit, the team playership – and that people from different situations – professionals, non-professionals, people who are not into sports – really see it and it really connects people.”

Our takeaway? Never limit yourself.

James Green has an announcement: he is coming out of retirement!

Yesterday, Green explained on social media, "I enjoyed my time with @usawrestling! I’ll be coaching through the World Championships and helping the U17/20 team bring back some individual and team titles. The fire inside is still burning and I can’t wait to get back to competing."

Uncle Yung Sales Tip: "It's never a 'no,' just a not now."

“What’s one piece of advice you would give entrepreneurs and sales people who keep getting told ‘NO’?”

My advice here is to remember, “It’s never a NO. Just a not now.”

Trust me on this. As a sports agent focusing on Olympic sports, I know about getting told no.

It takes persistence, creativity and understanding that a “NO” usually means you need to re-approach things from a different angle. Step back. Take time to develop a different approach. Then get back out there and keep trying.

So many of our best partnerships and sponsor relationships at CG Sports started off with a wonderful “NO” to my face :)

A few years ago one of our clients, Kara Lynn Joyce, was a keynote speaker at the Comcast Xfinity Leadership Event. She had a powerful closing quote from her speech that really stuck with the executives at Comcast:

"Trust your hard work is unlocking doors you can't see."

This is so true and very powerful to me because I see it happen every week. As long as you are able to keep moving stuff forward, even just a few inches, this is what seems to separate great teams from the pack.

It's hard to tell how far you've gone when you're in the middle of the grind, but when you look back - it's always amazing to see how far you came.

Do me a favor and plug your ears while singing a song. You can still hear it, can't you? That is bone conduction and it's sound that is delivered directly to the inner ear without needing to pass through the eardrum.

Now imagine applying bone conduction to your headphones. That is exactly what Shokz, formerly known as AfterShokz, has done. The lightweight titanium frame increases safety for the ear canal and are so comfortable you'll hardly notice you're wearing them. Bonus: they're also hygienic!
