Fueling the Olympic hype 🔥
Good morning. The Olympic hype is building.
Late summer means World Championship events for a lot of sports. For instance, the World Aquatic Championships and the Fencing World Championships are currently in full swing, while the World Para Swimming Championships and the UCI Track Cycling World Championships are quickly approaching.
If you've been following the pool events at the World Aquatic Championships, then you know exactly what I'm talking about regarding Olympic hype. Three World Records fell on night one alone: the women's 400 free (Ariarne Titmus, AUS - 3:55.38), the men's 400 Individual Medley (Leon Marchand, FRA - 4:02.50), and the women's 4x100 free relay (AUS - 3:27.96).
All three are incredible swims and I highly recommend you watch them (linked above). The men's 400 Individual Medley is especially endearing. Michael Phelps, the man who held the World Record for an astonishing 21 years, called the race with Rowdy Gaines and celebrated with Marchand on the podium.
But, World Records aren't the only story from this Championships: Katie Ledecky made history by becoming the first woman to earn 20 Career titles (tying Phelps with 15 individual golds); Lithuania's Ruta Meilutyte reclaimed the women's 100 breaststroke gold 10 years after originally winning it; and Titmus could add another World Record to her name in the women's 200 free.
While we're still one year out from Paris, a World Championships like this makes several things clear:
Athletes have ramped up their training and are making waves (literally) in their Olympic push.
Athletes are pushing each other to be better (watch the men's 400 IM again, but this time watch Carson Foster).
Regardless of who you talk to (retired athletes, media personnel, your aunt who is really into swimming, etc) one thing is clear: everyone is excited for the next year as we build to the Olympic Games.
Enjoy your Wednesday, folks.
